Philanthropy
At Green Denim Initiative we believe that an essential part of being a sustainable company is supporting practices and causes you believe in. Our denim is manufactured locally in Los Angeles, and we emphasize a desire to collaborate with our neighboring innovative artists and minds. Each month we will donate a portion of our sales to a local environmentally friendly and socially conscience charity. Some examples of the charities that we support are Safe Passage and CASA. By purchasing a pair of Green Denim you will be a part of this charitable action.
The vision of Safe Passage, a division of Women Crowned In Glory began eleven years ago from the giving spirit of Trish Steele. A woman of integrity and compassion, Mrs. Steele allied her friends and supporters together to create a Non-Profit 501(C)3 Corporation to shelter, educate, equip and direct women and their children to safety and survival of domestic violence.
Since 2000, more than 1000 women and their children have come to Safe Passage looking for shelter and support. Emergency shelter had been provided through the home of Mr. & Mrs. Jim Steele for five years. During 2001-2003 the Safe Passage Home oversaw the first transitional home in Sherman Oaks. Now Safe Passage has a unique program that transforms lives and breaks the cycle of domestic violence to a new life of success. The City Controller of Los Angeles Wendy Greuel and Mayor Antonio Villiaragosa awarded Safe Passage with a “Certificate of Appreciation” for outstanding citizenship and activities enhancing community betterment. The women and children of the families that have gone through the program have made great personal strides and re-established themselves into their own residence, new jobs, and new life within 6 months of services. Today they are giving back and sharing their success stories to inspire others who are in need.

In 1977, a Seattle juvenile court judge concerned about making drastic decisions with insufficient information conceived the idea of citizen volunteers speaking up for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom. From that first program has grown a network of more than 955 CASA and guardian ad litem programs that are recruiting, training and supporting volunteers in 49 states.
CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children, to make sure they don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Volunteers stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many abused children, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives. Independent research has demonstrated that children with a CASA volunteer are substantially less likely to spend time in long-term foster care and less likely to reenter care.

Green Denim Initiative is a proud member of 1% For The Planet, a growing partnership of organizations committed to sustainable business practices and giving back to the environment. Each of the 1,386 participating companies donate 1% of their sales to a network of over 2,398 environmental organizations worldwide. Over $41 million has been donated thus far. Members have defined the standard not just for commitment to the planet but to philanthropy as well. Unlike a pledge based on profits, one percent of sales is transparent, consistent and meaningful. It’s a high bar; one that clearly separates truly committed companies from those that aren’t, and one that motivates consumers to act.
